Fearing that the teachers would reveal his secret, the Doctor kidnapped them, beginning a series of exciting adventures. Ian's speciality was science, but his skills as a diplomat were also useful. He was often called upon to play peacemaker, and many times saved the lives of his fellow travellers. His often stormy relationship with the cantankerous Time Lord ended when he and Barbara finally returned to Earth in an abandoned Dalek time capsule.B'100,000 B.C.' to 'The Dalek Invasion of Earth' (and 'The Five Doctors') Apparently the Doctor's 15 year-old granddaughter, Susan was attending school in England when two of her teachers, Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright, intrigued by her unusual intelligence, investigated her mysterious home life. This forced the Doctor to whisk them away on a series of journeys, rather than allow them to reveal what they had discovered. Susan was fiercely loyal to the Doctor, and developed a close bond with Barbara. Her adventures in history included encounters with Marco Polo, Napoleon and Nero. After the Doctor had defeated the Daleks' attempt to invade Earth, he left Susan behind, knowing her future was with young freedom fighter David Campbell.B'100,000 B.C.' to 'The Chase' Barbara was a teacher at Coal Hill School when she first encountered the Doctor, through his granddaughter, Susan. With colleague Ian Chesterton she went to investigate the strange girl's home, and stumbled into the TARDIS. Her knowledge of history proved useful, as her travels with the Doctor included visits to 15th century South America, France in 1793, Rome during Nero's reign, and a lengthy journey in the company of Marco Polo. The Doctor's many attempts to take Ian and Barbara back to contemporary Earth were unsuccessful: it was a Dalek time machine that provided them with the opportunity to finally return home.B'The Highlanders' to 'The War Games' (and 'The Five Doctors' and 'The Two Doctors') Rescued from the battle of Culloden, in 1746, James Robert McCrimmon joined the TARDIS shortly after the Doctor had undergone his first regeneration. Jamie made up for his lack of intelligence with his bravery and loyalty. Amazed and astounded by technological wonders beyond his comprehension, Jamie frequently relied on the Doctor for explanations. An encounter with an alien race that had kidnapped thousands of human soldiers to act out elaborate real-life war games forced the Doctor to ask for Time Lords' help. As part of the Doctor's punishment Jamie was returned to Culloden, and his memories of travelling with the Doctor were erased.B'The Evil of the Daleks' to 'Fury From The Deep' Victoria was orphaned when the Daleks murdered her father, Victorian scientist Edward Waterfield. She decided to leave England to travel with the Doctor, who became something of a surrogate father figure. She was often teased about her prim manner and naivety by Jamie and the Doctor, but they formed a strong team. Following a series of adventures, (including two encounters with the Yeti, a visit to the Cybermen's tombs on Telos, and a battle with the Ice Warriors during the second ice age), Victoria decided to remain on Earth with the Harris family, after helping to destroy a seaweed creature with the amplified sounds of her screaming.rB'The Wheel in Space' to 'The War Games' (and 'The Five Doctors') Zoe was the librarian on the space Wheel when it was attacked by the Cybermen. Thankfully this coincided with the arrival of the Doctor and Jamie, who were able to thwart them. She hid on board the TARDIS, and pleaded with the Doctor to take her with him. Extremely intelligent, with a degree in pure mathematics - she was often able to outsmart the Doctor, although her inexperience frequently got her into trouble. When the Time Lords finally caught the Doctor, Zoe was returned to her own time stream, as part of their attempt to fix the Doctor's meddling.B'Terror of the Autons' to 'The Green Death' Josephine 'Jo' Grant had only just completed a brief training period as a spy when she had her uncle use his influence to assign her to UNIT. As the Doctor's assistant, Jo's knack for getting into trouble was immediately apparent. Ditzy, but fiercely independent, Jo's confidence and bravery grew with experience. As well as facing a series of adventures on Earth, during the Doctor's exile, she also visited a number of alien planets, including Skaro and Peladon. After disappointing a series of would-be suitors, Jo finally fell in love with Eco-warrior Professor Clifford Jones, and left the Doctor to explore the Amazon with her new fiance.B'The Time Warrior' to 'The Hand of Fear' (and 'The Five Doctors' and spin-off 'K9 and Company - A Girl's Best Friend') Resourceful Metropolitan journalist Sarah Jane Smith met the Doctor while posing as her virologist aunt, in an attempt to infiltrate UNIT's security. Stowing away in the TARDIS, she quickly found herself in mediaeval England. Sarah's curiosity, and her feminist views, frequently got her into trouble, but she relished her adventures with the Doctor. She witnessed the Doctor's regeneration into his fourth incarnation, and continued to travel with him until a call from the Time Lord's home planet forced him to return her to Earth. Later the Doctor sent her a present: a robot dog named K9...B'Spearhead From Space' to 'Inferno' (and 'The Five Doctors') Liz was the Doctor's replacement as UNIT's scientific advisor. When the Doctor returned to Earth, to begin his term of exile, she was reassigned as his assistant. She helped repel the first Nestene invasion attempt, witnessed the reawakening of the Silurian creatures, helped to prevent the kidnap of three alien ambassadors and stopped an insane scientist from cracking open the Earth's crust. During this latter adventure the Doctor visited a fascist parallel universe, where Liz was known as Section Leader Shaw! After only a handful of adventures, Liz eventually returned to Cambridge to continue her research.JB'Full Circle' to 'Earthshock' Adric, a teenage boy with a gift - and badge - for mathematical excellence, was a member of a street gang on the planet Alzarius, along with his brother, Varsh. Adric, alone and hungry for adventure, stowed away in the TARDIS after Varsh sacrificed his life to save the Doctor and his friends. Often frustrated by his clumsiness, and fiercely competitive, Adric struggled to find a useful role among the TARDIS crew. He ultimately gave up his life by remaining on board a spaceship that crashed into prehistoric Earth, causing the death of the dinosaurs.B'The Invisible Enemy' to 'Warriors' Gate' (and spin-off 'K9 and Company - A Girl's Best Friend') K9 was the creation of Professor Marius, who had made the loyal robot dog to circumvent weight restrictions when travelling to the Bi-Al asteroid. When he returned to Earth, Marius gave K9 to the Doctor. Capable of independent thought, and equipped with a blaster, K9 was a useful companion. The Doctor gave K9 to Leela when he left her on Gallifrey, but had already prepared K9 Mk II. Despite numerous technical problems which put him out of action, K9 Mk II travelled with the Doctor until he was given to Romana as a parting gift. The Doctor sent another K9 to Sarah Jane Smith, after she had returned to Earth.B'The Face of Evil' to 'The Invasion of Time' The rebellious Leela was a member of the warrior Sevateem tribe. She had just been exiled for heresy when she met the Doctor, who closely resembled the tribe's god, Xoanon. Leela forced her way into the TARDIS, and quickly became a loyal ally, who was usually quite capable of looking after herself, (although the Doctor strongly disapproved of her use of poisonous Janus thorns). During her travels Leela struggled with concepts and technology beyond her comprehension, but was inquisitive and keen to learn. After the Sontarans' attempt to invade the Doctor's home planet, Leela decided to remain there with Commander Andred.B'Logopolis' to 'Resurrection of the Daleks' Australian Tegan Jovanka was on her way to start a new job as an air hostess when she entered the TARDIS, thinking it was a genuine Police Box. Shortly afterwards, her aunt was murdered by the Master. After witnessing the Doctor regenerate into his fifth incarnation, she joined Nyssa and Adric in their travels with the Doctor. Tegan's adventures with the Doctor were especially traumatic: she was present when Adric died, and was mentally assaulted by the Mara on Deva Loka. Finally sickened by all the death she'd witnessed, Tegan left the Doctor and Turlough, after helping to thwart an attempt by the Daleks to invade time itself.B'The Ribos Operation' to 'The Armageddon Factor' Travelling alone after the departure of Leela and K9, the Doctor's TARDIS was stopped in mid-flight by the enormously powerful White Guardian, who wanted the Doctor to help locate the six scattered segments of the Key to Time. To assist the Doctor, he gave him a new companion: a Time Lord named Romanadvoratrelundar, (or 'Romana' for short). Although intelligent and sophisticated, Romana was a little haughty, and her naivety often tried the Doctor's patience. It also irked him that she was somewhat more qualified than he was! Their quest to assemble the Key completed, Romana chose to regenerate...SB'The Keeper of Traken' to 'Terminus' Nyssa was the aristocratic daughter of Counsel Tremas, who had been chosen to become the next Keeper (a position of great importance). The Master planned to use Tremas's investiture to give him a new regeneration cycle, and was renewed when he merged with Tremas, robbing Nyssa of her father. Orphaned, Nyssa was soon reunited with the Doctor, and they travelled together, with Adric, Tegan and Turlough, for some time, before arriving on Terminus. Here, Nyssa was infected by lazar's disease, and decided to stay behind, to help the Vanir research a cure.B'Mawdryn Undead' to 'Planet of Fire' Turlough was at Brendon School, in England, when he was approached by the Black Guardian, who persuaded him to help destroy the Doctor. Turlough's allegiances were tested when the Doctor saved Turlough's life. Gradually it was revealed that Turlough was an alien, marooned on Earth after a civil war on his own planet, Trion, which had claimed the life of his mother. His father and brother had been sent to the prison planet Sarn, where Turlough eventually decided to leave the Doctor. His time on board the TARDIS had been a difficult one, and he was never entirely trusted by his travelling companions.oCrprp~hVnrXtP`LUIan ChestertonWilliam RussellWilliam Hartnell ^U Susan ForemanCarole Ann FordWilliam Hartnell UBarbara WrightJacqueline HillWilliam Hartnell UJamie McCrimmon Frazer HinesPatrick Troughton UVictoria WaterfieldDeborah WatlingPatrick Troughton U Zoe Heriot Wendy PadburyPatrick TroughtonrUJo Grant Katy Manning Jon PertweeUSarah Jane SmithElisabeth Sladen Jon PertweeUElizabeth 'Liz' ShawCaroline Johnn Jon PertweeUAdricMatthew Waterhouse Tom BakerJUK9#Voice: John Leeson & David Brierley Tom BakerULeelaLouise Jameson Tom BakerU Tegan JovankaJanet Fielding Tom BakerU%Romanadvoratrelundar Mk. This introduced Mel, a bright and bubbly keep-fit fanatic, from Pease Pottage, Sussex. Mel tried, unsuccessfully, to introduce the Doctor to a regime of exercise and carrot juice. After the trial, she was still travelling with the Doctor, when an attack by a renegade Time Lord, the Rani, caused him to regenerate. Mel elected to leave the Doctor after an adventure on the ice planet Svartos, and joined forces with the roguish Sabalom Glitz, perhaps hoping to reform him.jB'Dragonfire' to 'Survival' When the Doctor first met Ace she was working as a waitress on the planet Svartos, after being plucked from her home in Perivale by a freak time storm. She had a rebellious streak, and aptitude for explosives, the result of a troubled upbringing. At the age of thirteen she'd burnt down a malevolent Victorian house, (a place she'd eventually revisit with the Doctor), and her best friend, Manesha, had been the subject of a racially-motivated arson attack. Ace matured considerably during her travels with the Doctor. Their last adventure together was on the planet of the cheetah people.AB'Doctor Who' (television movie) An accomplished surgeon and opera buff, Grace Holloway first encountered the Doctor in San Francisco, where he was fighting for his life after being cut down by a hail of bullets. Although she did her best to save him, Grace was confused by his alien anatomy and he died on the operating table. Naturally, she was shocked when she found a stranger in her car who claimed to be the man she had just killed. Soon she found herself in a race against time to prevent the destruction of the Earth, in the company of the Doctor's eighth incarnation. @&@RVvUMelBonnie Langford Colin BakerUAce Sophie AldredSylvester McCoyjUDoctor Grace HollowayDaphne Ashbrook Paul McGannAO,7&5PnL ( T|9"$t')'7/i24;@O&!@.12O,7&8PnL ( T|9"$t')'7/i24[8@B9AA2BD8E0I3J6J:K;LM>N=R1S7S<T4V?V5Z@&@ Table1 *Companion: (dActor: (d.Doctor Who: d"Details: d@ OOOO OOOOw@iTable1ColA9 (ColB9ColA10 (ColB10ColA11 ColB11ColA12ColB12 Index1ColA9 @==O,7&8|;(<nL ( T|9"$t')'7/i24[8l;j9
