It is best to backup and remove all batteries. Check the sell-by date when purchasing them (especially when buying in bulk) Avoid NiCads as they can die suddenly as opposed to gradually (more strain on the backup battery)@AThe settings for the different network services are stored in a ISP database file, this file is called ISP_DB.DAT and is located in the C:\System\Data\ folder. Is it worth saving a few dollars?Anyhow, if you review the 'Consumption' tip you will find that your Psion uses power even when turned off. No surprise when you consider that it has no physical switch off mechanism and must be in a permanent standby state so as to switch back on for alarms. Also, the batteries are used to maintain the contents of the RAM.Therefore, buying a PSU for your desk and leaving it plugged in over night will save you battery life and also make sure you never miss an alarm due to poor batteries.PSUs are also great when carrying out power drain activities like transferring things via the serial port to a PC (usually done at a desk anyway).ou add a new entry to the datafile.lled "1".e.g. C:\1\1\1\etc..What Ifound was that these directories took up approximately 5k of space. You can now run Spell with the new language dictionary... I want to use 2 dictionaries and switch from one to the otherFollow the same procedure as above (copying the 3 files to c:\system\data). Use the excellent freeware SwitchTask by Pascal NICOLAS. Where are the dictionary and the Thesaurus files located? The dictionary files are located in the folder z:\system\data of your ROM drive (Z). You can find here an explaination on how to access your ROM drive...Which files are involved? The first file to look at is 'z:\system\data\Lexicon.rsc'. This file contains references to 2 files : the dictionary and the thesaurus. Take a file viewer and note the name of these two files. The names of these files is dependent of the language of your series 5 : On the english version, they are called IENS9522.dat and REKTC400.dat. On the French version, they are called IFRF9531.dat and RFRTC450.dat. The number in these file names are just revision number and can therefore differ from machine to machine, i.e. the general naming format should be I***????.dat for the dictionary and R**TC???.dat with '*' language code and '?' revision number (to be confirmed). Thesaurus or not thesaurus ?Some version (French or Dutch for instance) only have two files, the thesaurus (R**TC???.dat) is missing. The reason seems to be a problem of ROM space, Psion probably had to make a choice between a bigger help file (around +160K compared to English) and the thesaurus (was it the right choice ?). ProblemsThere are a number of different problems: You can launch your second dictionary from WORD, but you can't add new words to the personal dictionary... There are some sample programs in your Psion's ROM, which you can look at by pressing Ctrl+Tab from the system screen and selecting drive Z: Look in \system\opl for Demo and TBarApp. The UseNet newsgroup for Psion programmers is comp.sys.psion.programmer You may want to read this regularly to see if you can pick up some tips from what other people are talking about and find out what is going on in Psion programmer land in general. You can post questions there asking for help, BUT FIRST make sure the answer is not in the manual. I'm sure I'm not the only reader on the group who finds it annoying having to answer questions by quoting the manual, it must be somewhat embarrassing for the questioner as well. :) Also; it's good form to prefix the subject line of a posting with something like [S5 OPL], this means that people who don't use a Series 5 or OPL can quickly skip the post. It also prevents you getting replies that are only relevant to the Series 3 or another Psion product.ATry this:Start WebSave the home page to #anything.htm (use any filename you like, it must start with #)Select File Open file... and select any .HTM file starting with the character #Web now shows you the contents of your disk/directory where the file was saved! You can navigate around the directory, and even save the displayed text as a HTML file by using File More Save as...This is a great feature, and allows you to use Web as a local file browser.~AThere is a known limitation in Email which causes this problem, if your network timeout period is more than around 30 minutes. You can obtain this through several methods: Take an existing Series 3x icon (48x48 pixels in size with a .PIC or .ICO extension), and use PsiWin 1.0 or 1.1 to convert it to a Windows .BMP file.Draw a new icon yourself in a drawing program on a Series 3x, and convert as above.Draw a new icon in a PC paint package, and save it directly as a Windows .BMP.Draw the icon in Sketch and use the Export option to save it as an EPOC picture file. It will be given an .MBM extension so will then need to be copied to a PC and converted back to a Windows .BMP. As you can see, this last method is a bit tortuous! Creating a Program IconNow you have created your basic icon, you need to prepare it for use with your program. 1. The Series 5 uses 3 sizes of icon for the system screen (one for each of the 3 zoom levels), each of which also has an associated mask. To explain:The icons are sized 48x48, 32x32 and 24x24 pixels. You can use just one 48x48 icon and let the Series 5 automatically scale the icon to the smaller sizes itself as the screen is zoomed. This may be acceptable for some styles of icon, but it loses resolution. The more reliable and recommended method (described below) is to create the 3 sizes of icon yourself from the master and optimise each for the size. Each icon must be supplied in 2 forms : the picture and its mask. A 'mask' is just a silhouette of the icon itself, all in black, that allows EPOC32 to mask out the screen background where the icon is situated. i.e. it lets white areas of the icon stay white. Without the mask they would be transparent and let the background screen colour show through (e.g. the EPOC logo).2. Use a PC paint program (Paint Shop Pro is an extremely good choice, and for it's shareware price, very reasonable) to create the required bitmaps from the master icon as follows. Make sure the icons are all saved as Windows bitmaps (.BMP), subtype RGB encoded, with 4 bits/pixel and max 16 colours. In my JWIN for EPOC32 program, the icon file has been left with the original 3 colours it had in it's Series 3 form - black, white and grey. However, it is possible to add another shade of grey, as 4 colours are routinely used in the Series 5. Note though, that we haven't always had success with using 4 colours as one grey shade sometimes gets lost in doing the conversion (the reason hasn't yet been tracked down).3. Start by taking the original 48x48 icon and use "Save As" with the name xxxxx48.bmp (xxxxx being any name of your choice). All these names are optional, but this is an efficient system for simplicity and organisation. Basically though, as long as you know what they are called for use in step 11, anything is OK!4. Use this icon (xxxxx48.bmp) and, for all areas enclosed by the outline of the actual icon, fill in with black - i.e. replace all grey and white pixels within the icon and make it into a silhouette. This will be the mask that EPOC32 requires. Save it as xxxxx48m.bmp. If you're still not sure about what a mask should look like, see the example pictures later on this page.5. Take the xxxxx48.bmp again and resize it to 32x32. Then tweak and touch it up until it looks good again. This is very subjective, but you'll have to lose some detail and simplify it for the smaller size. When done, save it as xxxxx32.bmp.6. Repeat Step 4 on icon xxxxx32.bmp to make its mask and save it as xxxxx32m.bmp.7. Take the xxxxx48.bmp again and resize it to 24x24. Once again, tweak and touch it up until it looks good! When done, save it as xxxxx24.bmp.8. Repeat Step 4 on icon xxxxx24.bmp and save it as xxxxx24m.bmp.9. You should now have 6 bitmap files: xxxxx48.bmp xxxxx48m.bmp xxxxx32.bmp xxxxx32m.bmp xxxxx24.bmp xxxxx24m.bmp To make things a bit clearer (especially concerning the masks), these images are the ones used to make the program icon for JWIN for EPOC32: Image/Size Normal Icon: Icon Mask:48x48 32x32 24x24 10. Copy the BMCONV.EXE program to this directory (you can delete it again from here after use), or make sure the program is within one of the PATHS specified in your Autoexec.bat file.11. You can run this program by specifying the each of the output and input files on the command line (Tip: execute BMCONV without any parameters to see the usage instructions). However it is easier to use Windows Notepad (or another text editor) to create a simple command file as follows: xxxxx.mbmxxxxx48.bmpxxxxx48m.bmpxxxxx32.bmpxxxxx32m.bmpxxxxx24.bmpxxxxx24m.bmp The following points apply to the file you've created: The first line xxxxx.mbm is the filename you are going to create for the Series 5, i.e. the BMCONV output file. The next 6 lines are the bitmap icons you've created, and will be the input files for BMCONV. It makes sense to list them in the sequence above (48 icon, 48 mask, 32 icon, 32 mask, 24 icon, 24 mask). However, as long as the icons are in pairs, the order should not make any difference to the final file, although this (as of yet) has not been checked.A very important thing to note - there must be a carriage return (ENTER) on the last line, such that the cursor moves to the next and last line of the file. The program fails to run without this linefeed.12. Now, save this file as (for example) "MAKE.TXT" in the directory with the icons and BMCONV.13. In Windows '95/NT 4.0, use Start|Programs|MS-DOS Prompt and then in the DOS window navigate to the directory which holds the icons and the text file you created. At the DOS prompt enter: BMCONV MAKE.TXTThe BMCONV program should then run and tell you the following: CompilingMultiple bitmap store type: File storePsion file: xxxxx.mbmBitmap file 1: xxxxx48.bmpBitmap file 2: xxxxx48m.bmpBitmap file 3: xxxxx36.bmpBitmap file 4: xxxxx36m.bmpBitmap file 5: xxxxx24.bmpBitmap file 6: xxxxx24m.bmpSuccess You should now have a file called xxxxx.mbm in the same directory! If it fails you've probably got a filename wrong. 14. To use this new MBM, copy it from your working directory to where you're developing your program (i.e. either a Series 5 machine or the relevant WINS directory). Then, make the relevant call to it in the APP...ENDA section of OPL. This will appear something like: APP AppName,AppUid&ICON "C:\CodePath\IconName.mbm"ENDA Extracting Icons from MBM filesThe above instructions deal with icon conversion/creation. However, you will obviously want to create MBM files for toolbars or other uses in your programs. The same principals apply, but here are a few more useful pointers... 1. Toolbar icons are 24x24 in size.2. A lot of toolbar icons you may not need to draw from scratch! You could copy one of the ROM application's MBM files to your local disk, to use the pictures it contains - if you don't know how, a very simple OPL program like this will do it (simply enter the path of the jMBM file you want manually then re-translate): PROC CopyFromRom:COPY "Z:\SYSTEM\APPS\WORD\WORD.MBM","C:\OPL"PRINT "File copied OK.GETENDPThere is also a far easier way, thanks to a program I mentioned at the top of this page called MBMView by Lieuwe de Vries. This will allow you to view and save any embedded picture from any MBM file (including those on the ROM)! 3. Once you have the file on your local disk, copy it to the PC and do a reverse BMCONV to extract the Window bitmaps from the MBM file. You can do this the easy way by creating a file similar to the "MAKE.TXT" example above, only use something like this: /U WORD.MBMREV_00.BMPREV_01.BMPREV_02.BMPREV_03.BMP........ (Insert a new line for every new .BMP here!)REV_100.BMP 4. Save the file as "REV_MBM.TXT" (or whatever you want). Once again, either copy BMCONV.EXE to the directory where the new text file and MBM file are, or make sure the program is in your PATH's. After that, simply run it by typing this at the DOS command prompt: BMCONV REV_MBM.TXTThat's it! You then end up with the specified number of .BMP files which contain corresponding icons extracted from the multiple MBM file. If BMCONV runs out of MBM's to decompile, it will stop with an error message, but you will find that it has created the .BMP files for all the icons present. There's no way of telling how many .BMP files will be produced, so some trial and error is required - if all 100 files output without BMCONV failing it's probably certain that there are more in the file! 5. View all the .BMPs in your PC paint package, or preferably use some sort of "Thumbnail" function (again, Paint Shop Pro comes in very handy here), to find out what they all are.6. Once you've sorted through all the BMP files you've got, and have found some you want to use in your toolbar, you can either use them as is, or modify them to suit your program's purposes. Use exactly the same method as described at the beginning to make one big MBM with them all in.7. You don't actually need to bother creating the silhouette masks for each icon, as they work fairly successfully without. When you load the icons to your toolbar in OPL, just load the same icon index in twice (once as the icon and again as the mask).8. However, better results can be obtained by creating an equivalent silhouette mask for each toolbar icon. This will allow white areas of the icon to stay white, and not be transparent and let the grey background of the buttons show through. Something else worth pointing out is that when making icons for the toolbar or even when you're combining bigger pictures into one MBM to load from within your program, the order in which you list them in the "MAKE.TXT" file will be the order they appear within the MBM file. The indexing starts from 0, so the gLOADBIT command to load the first icon must point to 0. One final, useful point to note is that the MBM file holding your program icon does not need to be distributed with your app (its details are stored in the resultant .AIF file which OPL32 generates). However, the MBM that contains your toolbar icons/other program pictures must be distrubuted with your program, and you've got to use gLOADBIT when you want to show the bitmaps/icons it contains.$0Sketch./\(./C?TOPU?UUCTPUUU1?@P1OCS?TP?UO5 ?S50CT0 5?U 0P5O3 CSE0<< BClove TechnologyTel: 01202 302796Fax: 01202 30041943 Springbank RoadBournemouthBH7 7EL100255.3642@compuserve.comwww.clove-tech.co.ukAll stuff Psion.Planet PFundpfund@uni2a.unige.chwww.geocities.com/SiliconValley/8130/Psion accessories.Purple Software LtdTel: 0171 387 7777Fax: 0171 387 1188PO Box 7535LondonNW1 2WFpurple_software@compuserve.comwww.purplesoft.comSoftwareSystemslink Two LtdTel: 01234 711220Fax: 01234 240256Supplies top quality leather cases for the Psion range of computersWidget SoftwareTel: 01438 815444Fax: 01438 815222121 London RoadKnebworthHertforshideSG3 6EXinfo@widget.co.ukwww.widget.co.ukWidget sell a whole array of Psion equipment and software. The ISP file contains settings for the ISP, and the user can simply load the settings directly from the ISP file, he does not have to enter anything by hand.Basic File FormatInternet Service Provider (.ISP) files are standard ASCII plain text files. They can be generated by any standard text editor, and also on the Series 5 itself (using Word and exporting with File | More | Export as text file...).File ContentThe .ISP file contains the following fields, with each field being on a new line. If a field is not present, then the default value is used...Service Connection type = DirectAccount Ask before connecting = checkedAddresses Get IP address from server = checked Get DNS address from server = checkedLogin Port settings = 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bitNAME:The provider name identifies the service provider in the Network control on the Control panel. This field must be supplied. The name should therefore not be too long, around 20 characters (depending upon character width) will fit nicely in the dialog, e.g. NAME:SuperNet PlusNUM:The number is the main telephone number used to access the service provider. To allow the the Series 5 to intelligently dial the correct number independent of location, the number should be entered in international format, preceded by a + and the national and area codes are seperated by a space, e.g. NUM:+41 800 123456This will dial an 0800 number (123456) in Switzerland. If no NUM is specified, the settings default to Connection type = Direct.DNS1:DNS2:The primary (and secondary, if used) DNS addresses. If DNS1 and DNS2 are not specified, the settings default to Get DNS address from server. Ensure the correct DNS address is entered, eg: DNS1:194.127.0.18 DNS2:194.127.1.10PORT:The port settings can be either 8N1 (8 data bits, No parity, 1 stop bit), or 7E1 (7 data bits, Even parity, 1 stop bit). Most providers use 8N1. eg: PORT:8N1If PORT is not specified the settings default to 8N1.LSCR:(followed by login script starting on next line)If a specific logon script (LSCR) is required, it can be entered here. Psion have obviously tried to cover the majority of providers with their generic logon script (which is called when no specific LSCR script is specified). Some providers (CompuServe, PsionWorld) will require special logon scripts. The logon script is taken as starting on the line directly after the LSCR: identifier, and continuing until the end of the file (or until another command is recognised??).If no LSCR is supplied, the Use login script check box is not checked and the generic login script is used.Jochen Siegenthaler "Arial "Arial "Arial "Arial;, ! &'4.7J 61E "Arial"Word.app CiCJ iF*Dhi "Arial$`Q4P{q Mʩv kE-mail & Connection LogsChris Farrow 3.1 "Arial VPPuLK"Arial"Using Web as a local File Browser?"!"ArialJochen Siegenthalera"Arial"Arial3.1iXk "Arial'0/ "ArialFix 'No Dialtone' ProblemJochen Siegenthaler3.1j~w "ArialY$# "Arial&Email crashes with reason number = 87:&% "Arial Jochen Siegenthaler3.1np "Arial\o/. Right click on any troublesome file type (e.g. if Word files always automatically convert to MS Word - right click on a Word file) and select 'Change' and then 'Display choice of converters when copying'.DAlthough it is fairly simple to manually install things on your Psion, software authors would be better thought of if they created an optional install script. This would allow programs to be installed by simply selecting the script.Sounds tricky - forget it - it's so simple!Firstly, if you don't have PsiWin 2.1, you'll need a program called PsiSetup (http://www.rmrsoft.com). If you don't have PsiWin 2.1 though, get it now @ www.psion.com.Right, an install script will look like this:[PATHWHEREFILESSHOULDGO]FILENAMEE.g.,[\SYSTEM\APPS\PROGNAME\]PROGNAME.APP[\SYSTEM\APPS\PROGNAME\]PROGNAME.AIF[\SYSTEM\APPS\PROGNAME\]PROGNAME.MBM[\SYSTEM\APPS\PROGNAME\]PROGNAME.DAT[\SYSTEM\APPS\PROGNAME\]PROGNAME.HLP[\SYSTEM\OPX\]SYSRAM1.OPX[\DOCUMENTS\]READMENB: Any directories that don't exist will be created. Remember to set it back to 115200 when finished.Call the file NAME.SISgA'Use the force..."To activate the auto-compact feature of the Data app, sort the database twice (after each other).(NB - this won't work when the database is already compacted and you may have to sort more than twice. To use Voice Memos under these conditions do the following. Before closing down press the external record button until the machine bleeps. The Record application is launched but is labelled as 'Voice notes'. Now switch off. The Network icon gives access to the settings needed by the Series 5 to establish a network connection. A network connection can be a direct connection to a local network in an office environment (via WinNT 4.0 SP3 RAS) or a dial-up connection to a office network or an internet service provider. The Network icon is added to the Control panel when Message Suite is installed for the first time. The Psion Series 5 can store many different settings for different network connections. Each network connection is called a network service, and one network service is always the Current network service -there is only one serial port, and thus only one network service can be current, but you can change the Current network service at any time from the Network icon in the Control panel. Most people will think of the network service settings as being the settings needed to connect to their ISP (Internet Service Provider) for email and web browsing using the Message Suite software's Email and Web programs, however it is important to remember that these settings are really there to build a network connection.Once a network connection has been made, a program can use the connection to do a certain task or number of tasks.Where are the Settings for the Network Services stored? The settings for the different network services are stored in a ISP database file, this file is called ISP_DB.DAT and is located in the C:\System\Data\ folder. When you edit a network service, you are editing an entry in the ISP_DB.DAT datafile. When you add a new network service, you add a new entry to the datafile. If the datafile is empty or does not exist, then the Network control in the Control panel will automatically load network settings from any ISP files found in the C:\System\Data\ directory the next time the control is opened. This is a good reason to store any ISP files in C:\System\Data\. If no ISP files exist in C:\System\Data\, and no network services have yet been setup, then the Current network service shows .Adding a new Network ServiceBefore you can use any program that requires a network service (eg: Email or Web), you must correctly define and configure the network service. Here is a step-by-step procedure to add a new network service from a given ISP file:From the System screen, open the Control panel from the toolbar (or select it from the Tools menu).Double-tap the Network icon (or highlight it and press Enter).Tap New (or press Ctrl-N) to create a new Network service setting.Change the Based upon line to display Settings from file.On the Name line select the name of the appropriate ISP file. Note that the default disk and folder is C:\, if the ISP file exists on your Series 5 somewhere other than C:\ then you will have to change the Disk and Folder lines accordingly.Tap OK (or press Enter). If you do not have an ISP file for your network service, then you can make the new service Based upon either the Generic settings or upon the Current network service. Now that you have added a new network service, the next step is to ensure that at the very least the Standard phone number is correct for your location. You may also wish to check all other items as shown below:Editing a Network ServiceBefore you use a new network service, you must check (and edit if required) the network service settings. NOTE: To open the Edit network service dialog, open the Network control, select the desired network service to edit, and tap Edit (or press Ctrl+E) on the Network service settings dialog. Many of the items can be pre-defined in an ISP file. This is noted as appropriate for each setting below.Service pageName can be left unaltered. This is simply the name of the network service (eg: your Internet Service Provider). If you wish to change it, you may do so, but be aware that only about 20 characters can be nicely displayed on the Series 5 Network service settings dialog..If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then the Name will already be given.Connection type is always Dial-up for a modem connection. Direct is only used if you have connected directly to a suitable server (eg: WinNT RAS).If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then the Connection type is normally set to Dial-up.Use smart dialling is only relevant if you travel and wish to connect to the same phone number from your various locations. Smart dialling ensures that the country and area code are dialled correctly if required. If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then Use smart dialling will normally be ticked.Standard phone number is the phone number that the Series 5 will dial to connect to your network. You must know the phone number you need, and you must ensure that it is entered correctly here.If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then a Standard phone number will normally be given, but you must check it and make sure it is correct.Other phone numbers can also be entered, but are normally not required. If you wish to enter some, then I recommend you first setup some locations. This is under further study - I wish to try and understand the best way to use other phone numbers. If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then there are normally no Other phone numbers.Account pageAsk before connecting will force you to enter your username and password at each and every connection. This is very secure (no-one can find out your password) but it is a nuisance if you connect many times a day. If you wish to store the username and password on the Series 5 so that you do not have to enter it at each connection, then do not tick Ask before connecting, and enter a Username and Password on the lines below. If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then Ask before connecting will be ticked. Change as desired.Username is the username (case-sensitive!) for the network service. This will have been asssigned to you by your service provider.CompuServe users please note: you must enter your numerical user ID. The registered alias will not work.If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then no Username will be provided. Enter as required.Password is the password (case-sensitive!) as assigned by the service provider. If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then no Password will be provided. Enter as required.CompuServe users please note: you must enter your normal CompuServe password. Do not enter your POP3 mailbox password.Confirm password by entering your password again. If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then no Confirm password will be provided. Enter as required.Addresses pageGet IP address from server is normally ticked for most network services. Very few service providers assign you a unique IP address, but if they do, then untick this box and enter the IP address in the line below. If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then Get IP address from server will be correctly set. Do not change.IP address is your unique, permanent, IP address as assigned by your service provider. Most service providers use dynamic IP addresses, whereby the Series 5 must get the IP address from the server each time when connecting (see also above). If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then your IP address will not be given. If Get IP address from server is not ticked, then you must enter your IP address.Get DNS address from server is normally ticked. Most service providers allow the Series 5 to ask for the DNS address each time it connects. Some service providers however have fixed DNS addresses; if your provider has informed you of the DNS address(es), then untick this box and enter them below. If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then Get DNS address from server will be correctly set. Do not change.Primary DNS address is the address of the first DNS server. If your service provider has told you this, then enter it here. If an address is already entered, then do not change it unless you know what you are doing. If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then the Primary DNS address will be correctly set. Do not change.Secondary DNS address is the address of the second DNS server. If your service provider has told you this, then enter it here. If an address is already entered, then do not change it unless you know what you are doing. If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then the Secondary DNS address will be correctly set. Do not change.Login pagePort settings are normally 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit for most service providers. Some service providers will require 7 data bits, even parity, 1 stop bit to get the login script to recognise the prompts. If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then the Port settings will be correctly set. Do not change.Use login script allows the Message Suite to use a supplementary script to connect to the service provider. Most modern service providers do not require you to use a login script, and if you have not ticked this box, then the Series 5 will attempt to open a PPP connection immediately after the remote modem has reported a CONNECT. Some modern service providers require however that a specific login procedure is used, and this can be catered for in the login script. Normally the ISP will tell you what is required. If you are unsure, then ask me.Warning: if you remove the tick from Use login script and then close the dialog with Done, any prior script will be deleted. Should you then re-tick the Use login script box at a later date, the generic script will be displayed. If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then Use login script will be correctly set. Do not change the setting, and do not change the script (if supplied). It may end up many times bigger on your Psion - that is, until it is compressed automatically when loaded into Data.(e.g. a 72.8k CSV file on my PC took up 1.34Mb after conversion - when loaded into Data, the file was compressed down to 75.7k)The problem with this is if like me, you don't have much space left on your Psion, copying big files over won't leave you the space to store this inflated uncompressed file. One option is to backup Psion files on your PC and then temporarily delete them to give you the space. When loaded into Data, the file will be compressed then you can copy your files back.Alternatively if you have the Psion Emulator, use this the PsiWin Convert utility (StartProgramsAccessoriesPsiWin) to convert on your PC, and load it into the emulator. This will compress it. Now copy across as normal. It does not update PsiWin 2.1 to PsiWin 2.2 PsiWin 2.1 Service Release 1 addresses a number of issues, outlined below: Synchronization under Windows NT with 'non-admin' access rights: You can now create synchronization tasks and synchronize information when logged on to any PC running Windows NT, regardless of your access rights. Labels containing symbols and accented characters: Converting or synchronizing a Data file now preserves all characters in the database labels. Data files containing labels of type 'Memo' : You can now convert all characters stored in Data labels of type 'Memo'. The 255 character limit no longer applies. Only users who have experienced the problems described above, or who are likely to experience them, need to download this update. Installing Service Release 1 Unzip the file to a temporary folder, e.g. C:\Temp Double-click on the file Setup.exe and follow the instructions to complete the installation. You can use PsiWin/Service Release 1 straight away. It is not necessary to restart your PC. Removing PsiWin / Service Release 1 If you need to uninstall PsiWin for any reason, you must remove the Service Release first. To do this, select Settings|Control Panel from the Start menu, select the Add/Remove Programs icon and highlight PsiWin Service Release 1. Click the Add/Remove button. You can now uninstall PsiWin in the same way.BIt seems to be a ROM "bug" in that the Distance from bottom margin is set so high (1.27cm) that the footer is pushed up the page and not printed.Reset the "Distance from bottom margin" so that is is less (making the footer space big enough to fit in the bits you want), say 0.25 or 0.5 cm. Then make sure this does not overlap with the margin settings (so that the bottom margin should be set at say 5cm if you have a large footer.Check this looks OK in the preview page and then it should print ok.(I think that's right but don't have my printer here to check - basically keep playing around with the distance from bottom margin and the bottom margin settings until it works!)rKI have been using Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMHy) rechargeable batteries with my Series 5 for several months now, and this brief article includes some comments which people considering this may find useful. This article follows on from a report I wrote some time ago, studying the various types of AA batteries available for the Series 5 (eg. Alkaline, NiMHy). In the original report I carried out numerous tests to determine which AA battery provided the best lifetime for the Series 5. My conclusion was that the NiMHy battery provided a long 'use-time', and unlike older Nickel-Cadmium rechargeables they do not suffer fom 'memory effects' whichcan reduce their effectiveness.I now know that this study was slightly flawed due to a recent discovery I have made regarding rechargeble batteries. This is based on the way rechargeable batteries work.In order to replenish their charge, rechargeable batteries allow a 'tricklecurrent' to flow through them whilst they are in the charger. This is why the rate of charging is related to the type of charger used, as the current flow is dictated by the charger. When NiMHy's are used in the Series 5, they behave normally during standarduse. The issue arises when the MAINS power supply is plugged in and poweredup. If you are using NiMHy batteries AND a mains adaptor, because the batteries allow a 'trickle current' to flow through them, the batteries will actually CHARGE-UP in situ. This sounds like an excellent idea, except that the Series 5 was not (I think) designed to work this way.I initially found this when I picked up my Psion and found that that batterycompartment had become VERY VERY HOT. I checked the battery status, andfound that the current set of NiMHy's had lasted 39 hrs and was still at 2.8V!The recommendation from Psion is that you change your NiMHy's to alkalineswhilst using the mains adaptor! Not a particularly useful solution.I have been using the mains adaptor without problems for several months now,but I do check the battery status regularly. If the battery approaches FULL Voltage (~2.8V for most NiMHy's) then it is IMPORTANT that the mains adaptoris removed/turned off. If this is not done then you risk damage to both the Psion and the batteries.Aside from this, there appears to be no down-side to using these batteries, and they have the added advantage of automatically re-charging during timespent on main power....everyone's a winner! In conclusion, NiMHy batteries are an ideal way of reducing the cost of running your Series 5, but if you tend to use your Psion on mains power MOST of the time, then it is probably more hassle than it is worth. For users who have a balance of time spent 'mobile' and on mains power, then the situation is ideal for NiMHy's. For those who never use mains power, and who travel a lot without access to a charger then good quality alkalines (eg. Duracell) are still the best option.GAidan Foley BE CEng MIChemE (the list of qualifications are important for this tip) has submitted the following, and slightly unorthodox tip for extending the life of batteries! Here's the tip as written by Aidan:'Try taking the batteries out. Give them a good chew, either with your back teeth or a pair of pliers, to put a series of small dents all over the surface. (Usually about six chews per battery does for me). But not enough to damage the overall shape or puncture the casing. (To avoid leakage and damage to your Psion or any other device). Ideal for getting out of a spot of bother. Of course: No liability will be accepted for losses of any kind, (including teeth, dentures, electrical equipment, taste etc).I'm 'currently' at 345mAh extra above the 719mAh I had when I got my first warning, and no second warning yet. This is typical. (That's approaching 50% extra!).'Editors Comment: If you're like me, you'll probably think this tip is a wind up. However, there is an explanation which Aidan has kindly provided.'All reactions go faster when well mixed. For example everyone who adds sugar to warm drinks stirs to speed up the dissolving, and petrol is well mixed with air in carburettors. Industrial reaction systems use pumps, agitators or turbulent flow patterns to make sure reactions proceed under control.Batteries work by bringing together two compatible half cells to provide a potential difference. In dry cells there are solid and liquid reactants. The bulk is solid in a dry cell (unlike liquid sulfuric acid in cars lead-acid battery). Solids are difficult to mix well, and in a 'tired' battery just a little mixing makes all the difference and provide extra life. I provide this by a quick chew, just enough to put small dents in the surface
