Postage ready reckoner
(Thanks to Mike Coon) It's a common problem. You've got a parcel
that you know needs a certain postage value attaching, and you've picked up
books of standard First and Second class stamps; what's the most cost-effective
combination for making up the necessary postage? |

Comprehensive mortgage
analyser (Thanks to Chiu Kwok Chu Maurice) Another mortgage
calculator, but this one applies to any currency and is more flexible:
- By giving the basic information such as 'amount of
principal', 'interest rate', 'years' and 'the number of payment period per
year', it automatically generates two summary tables, one for monthly payments,
yearly payments, interest paid and principal paid, and the other for the
'principal changes in each payment period'.
- By entering the number of periods over which payment
has be made, it gives you the information on the number of periods left, the
amount of money paid, the amount of interest paid, the amount of principal paid
and the amount of principal left.
These information is useful if you have to make early
repayment of the loan and for taxation purposes. For the latter, you may need
to know the amount of interest paid to request for tax exemption.

Gift Aid Calculator
(Thanks to Michael Ernstoff) For charitable donations via Gift
Aid, this spreadsheet works out: a) How much the charity gets after it
claims back tax b) How much the donor's tax allowance increases if they are
a higher rate taxpayer c) How much less tax that equates to. The
spreadsheet allows the user to amend a) The amount donated b) The basic and
higher tax rates. Obviously it only applies to the UK tax system. The formulae
also possibly applies to deeds of covenant. |
