Review: Star Wars: Lethal Alliance (DS)

Score: 78

Let's be honest here. Fiddling around playing Star Wars on a games console isn't a respectable activity for a grown man - if this is you then get a life. Star Wars: Lethal Alliance is unashamedly aimed at the core 5 to 15 year old boy fan and, on this level, it works fairly well.

Star Wars

You play a character called Rianna and you've got to fight your way through levels of Imperial stormtroopers and monsters in order to steal the plans for the Death Star (in order to pass them on to be planted inside R2D2? - come on, keep up at the back). You're aided in this task by a clever little mechanical friend 'Z-58-0', who helps you climb and defend yourself.

Star Wars: Lethal Alliance is basically a first person shoot-em-up with occasional puzzles and the odd mini-game thrown in for good measure. The frame rate and sound are good and all on-screen action is satisfying. Your blaster is automatically locked on the nearest bad guy, which will infuriate anyone experienced in the ways of Quake or the like, but which is actually quite fun for youngsters as they get all the fun of the mayhem without getting killed too often.

In-game puzzles like finding a way past force fields are handled in similar straightforward manner and players won't be stumped for long. The mini-games are made relevant to the quest and diverting if not actually that much fun.

Like many DS titles I've seen recently, there's poor use of the dual screens and other DS hardware features. Star Wars: Lethal Alliance is more fun than the boring and frustrating Revenge of the Sith although your average teenage gamer will still get through it in a couple of hours.
